Seminar Summary

Everyone should have the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to their community. Yet the health and human services sector is experiencing deep funding cuts and flat charitable giving that leave organizations ill-equipped to address the complex issues facing their communities. The important work of human services is simply not resonating with the public.

The National Human Services Assembly’s Reframing Initiative seeks to change that by building public understanding of the sector to encourage more vibrant civic participation and deepen support for effective programs. As part of this multi-year research project, the Assembly engaged the Frameworks Institute, a renowned nonprofit communications firm, to develop an evidence-based strategy for reframing the work of the sector.

In this seminar, you will hear the findings from this groundbreaking research and learn how to help lead efforts to create a cohesive voice for human services. We will also do hands-on activities so you become familiar with using a new and robust set of online tools. You will leave the session better equipped to integrate a new narrative into your communications strategies. This training is relevant and beneficial for all human services providers, as well as those in healthcare, community engagement, and politics.

Advance Preparation

Talking Human Services: A Frameworks Message Memo. The foundational document for this initiative, it synthesizes the research that informed the development of the new frame and offers recommendations for the human services field to utilize the frame and more effectively communicate the scope and value of their work.

Building a New Narrative on Human Services Toolkit. The toolkit is a practical guide for reframing that includes examples of how traditionally framed messages can be reframed using the new narrative and frame elements. There are FAQs, message cards, example Op-Eds and other tips for integrating the new frame.

This seminar is open to nonprofit and government employees, and community members. The price of this workshop is $15 for One Voice members and $30 for non-members. A maximum of four individuals per member organization may RSVP for each workshop at this time; we encourage Executive Directors, Board Members, Development Directors, or Communications staff to attend.

If more than four individuals from your agency are interested in attending, please email kiya@onevoicecentraltx.org to place additional individuals on the waiting list. We are also holding an afternoon session advanced workshop on reframing fundraising appeals and client/organization stories; you can RSVP for that session on this page.

12:00-1:00 p.m. – Lunch Break & Check In for Afternoon Training

1:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Advanced Reframing Seminar: How to Tell Better Organization/Client Stories & Reframe Your Fundraising Appeals
Location: Integral Care - Dove Springs (5015 S IH 35 Frontage Rd Ste. 200, Austin, TX 78744)
Presenter: Bridget Gavaghan, Director, National Reframing Initiative

In this session, graduates of Level 1 Reframing Seminar (held in April and October of 2016 and in May 2018) will devote more time to hands-on activities to apply the full frame to your communications. We will address any questions that have arisen since the last workshop, while spending time discussing how to apply the frame to fundraising appeals and client stories. We will build on previous conversations about how to include individuals in your stories in a way that generates, and doesn’t suppress, support for your work.

In this seminar, more time is devoted to working together and independently on hands-on activities to apply the full frame. We also spend time addressing commonly asked questions, including how to write thematic stories and using data in the frame.

Attendees of the seminar should bring an organizational communications piece, a fundraising appeal, and/or a client story to work on. This is a hands-on workshop and attendees will work on reframing the materials that they bring.
