  • August 10, 2017
    3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Learn more about SAFE, a merger between SafePlace and Austin's Children Shelter, and get answers to any questions you may have about whether an acquisition or merger would be a beneficial move for your organization. This is an informal, small group discussion with a special opportunity to learn and discuss the experiences and lessons learned of forming The SAFE Alliance from experienced leaders Julia Spann and Kelly White.

About our presenters:

Julia has 28 years of experience in the human services field, with specific areas of expertise ranging from women and children’s issues to poverty, basic needs, victimization and homelessness.  She has been a critical member of SAFE’s history and development, having served with the Center for Battered Women and SafePlace for 18 years, most recently as Executive Director.  She summons every aspect of her vast nonprofit management experience to drive social change:  shaping how people think, feel and behave about violence, abuse, oppression and poverty.  Fighting for the fundamental right for all people to live with respect and safety is what drives her every day.

Kelly has been a non-profit CEO for over 30 years with a special focus on organizations that support women and children. Kelly was hired as the executive director of the Center for Battered Women in 1993, which merged with the Austin Rape Crisis Center in 1998 to become SafePlace. She helped to lead the merger that created SafePlace, two capital campaigns and multiple building projects. She left her role as executive director of SafePlace at the end of 2003. She subsequently spent two years as the executive director of the Chicago Foundation for Women and then returned to Austin in 2010 to take over as the CEO at the Austin Children’s Shelter. Kelly is known as a strategic thinker, a visionary, with a laser focus on doing the best and right work for the people an agency serves. Kelly has a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Kansas in Occupational Therapy. Email: kwhite@safeaustin.org
