  • What does your organization do?

    People’s Community Clinic is a primary care medical practice for uninsured and medically underserved Central Texans.
  • How did you become interested in this work?

    Early in my legal career I was involved in litigation regarding access to healthcare and as a young lawyer I served on the PCC Board of Directors.
  • What drives your passion?

    My passion comes from a deep and longstanding commitment to a just society. I firmly believe that access to quality affordable healthcare is a basic human right.
  • Did you have a mentor or a role model?

    I really didn’t have a single mentor, but there were a number of folks along the way who encouraged me in my career. I have especially fond memories of a judge who provided guidance to me as a newly minted attorney.
  • What's the biggest challenge in your work?

    Healthcare is such a rapidly changing industry that it’s hard to stay on top of everything. Change is the only constant.
  • What's the best advice that you have ever received?

    We’ll all die with our in-boxes full so take care of yourself and find work-life balance.
  • What are your top tips for new Executive Directors?

    - Take time to listen to others, there’s a lot of untapped wisdom to be gained.

    - Don’t be afraid to hire folks smarter than you.

    - Build a strong team and trust your team to do the right thing.

    Bonus tip: Meet individually with your Board members to build trust, get feedback and make sure they are having good experiences.
