  • What does your organization do?

The Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation provides Camp Cell-A-Bration opportunities which is a special needs camp for children suffering from sickle cell disease, education, awareness, support, support groups, limited financial assistance, newborn screening notification and case management.
  • How did you become interested in this work?

My late husband and founder suffered from this life threatening, hereditary blood disease. I wanted to help him and so many others like him who were suffering with sickle cell disease.
  • What drives your passion?

My love and determination for those suffering from sickle cell disease and needing to make a difference. Often individuals and families facing this serious condition are isolated and withdrawn. With our services, these secluded families become more socialized and we provide them with tools to increase their quality of life.
  • Do you have a mentor or a role model?

My late husband, Marc Thomas, has been a role model and true example of hard work and dedication. Marc suffered from sickle cell disease, pulmonary hypertension and wore oxygen 24 hours a day. Even with all these complications, he never stopped championing for those suffering from sickle cell disease. That determination and drive continues to empower me to work for our deserving families.
  • What's the biggest challenge in your work?

Working in the non-profit sector can be very difficult at times. My biggest challenge is often trying to accomplish too many tasks, and separating clients from my personal life. Knowing clients for several years, they really are viewed as family members and that can take an emotional toll on how you function as an Executive Director. Another challenge is a lack of funding which inhibits the amount of services you can provide to clients.
  • What's the best advice that you have ever received?

My best advice for life situations and challenges is to pray first, or reflect and let your own conscious guide you.
  • What are your top tips for new Executive Directors?

I would encourage a new Executive Director to stay focused on their specified task and do not overwhelm yourself with delegable tasks, stay committed to the non-profit’s mission, and always reserve some time for yourself to serve others appropriately.
